SURIANA WELFARE SOCIETY MALAYSIA

promotes and protects the rights of children. We are a voice for those who are subject to abuse, abandonment, neglect, exploitation, and human trafficking.  As a registered NGO based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; we are actively involved in our community and passionately pursuing our mission to serve with excellence and compassion because we know children deserve nothing less.

SURIANA WELFARE SOCIETY MALAYSIA is a registered Malaysian Non-Government Organization (Registration Number: PPM-010-10-04122010) that is focused on Child Protection. Founded in 2011, we have been actively involved in promoting and protecting the rights of children. Suriana’s name is derived from the phrase “Suara Rintihan Kanak-Kanak” which means “The Voice For Children”.
We protect the children through our proactive programs such as:

  • The ChildSafe Program
  • Kidzone
  • Safezone

We have experts in our board of advisors as well as in our management team that many years of experience in training, engagement and defending the rights of children.

We are part of the Royal Malaysian Police Force’s (PDRM) D11 Child Protection Team as well as strategic partnerships with other groups that prioritise child protection.

We are dedicated to proactively protect children in Malaysia from abuse. We protect children by raising awareness through social awareness programs, education, the media, engagement with the authorities and various other activities. We adopt a multi faceted approach targeted toward children, parents and communities. We also provide services to families and the community in our efforts to minimize the risk of abuse to children.

We work in accordance and support of Malaysia’s adoption of the UN Convention on the rights of a child that upholds the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of all children below 18 years. It is based on four core principles, namely the principle of non discrimination, the best interests of the child, the right to life, survival and development, and considering the views of the child in decisions which affect them (according to their age and maturity)

The ChildSafe Program is a holistic Child Protection initiative that takes into account the best practices in Child Protection and is implemented in pre-schools to protect children.  This program is developed and implemented by Suriana Welfare Society Malaysia to complement and enhance the existing guidelines and protocols for Child Protection set by the Malaysian Education Department and the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
The protection standards and measures include on-site safety best practices, training of management, teachers, staff, parents and the empowerment of children in minimising the risk of child abuse among others. It also entails awareness and training on issues of child protection online and cyber-wellness for educators, parents and children.
Accreditation is awarded to the pre-schools that effectively implements the best practices.

As part of our Child Abuse Prevention Initiative and eradication of urban poverty, we founded Kidzone Mentari. Kidzone Mentari is a neighborhood child abuse prevention and activity center as well as a community center focused on providing various services to the community in need.  Located at the heart of Desa Mentari,(on the 8thfloor of Block 5), Kidzone Mentari serves some one thousand families currently living below the poverty line.  Some families’ house up to eleven children and adults all crammed in a space no larger than 650 square feet.  The main provider only earns between RM300 to RM1,000 per month. The sole purpose of the outreach effort is to provide children activities, tuition and counseling for parents and legal guardians.  The community center also provides legal aid services to those in need, provides talks and training, counseling services and periodic medical aid to the community.  Teachers in our center are trained to identify and observe signs of child abuse.  We currently have 250 children registered in Kidzone Mentari.

Safezone : The Suriana Child Protection and Counseling Center located in Taman Petaling serves at-risk children, families and communities in crisis to prevent child abuse. This center engages and mobilizes families and the community in issues of child abuse and provides counseling services to families. Our programs work with children, parents and the community to create healthier environments for children, ultimately building stronger families. By providing families and the community with tools and education they need to build nurturing homes, we are breaking the cycle of abuse: One child at a time, one family at a time and one community at a time.
